Participants were asked to repeat a syllable–tone combination immediately after hearing it. Half of all participants were exposed to speech from 1 talker (low variability) while the other half heard speech from 4 talkers (high variability). Half of the L1 English participants were given daily explicit instruction on Mandarin tone contours, while the other half were not. Tone accuracy was measured by L1 Mandarin raters (n = 104) who classified productions according to their perceived tonal category. Explicit instruction of tone contours facilitated L1 English participants’ production of rising and falling tone contours. High variability input alone had no main effect on participants’ productions but interacted with explicit instruction to improve participants’ productions of high-level tone contours. These results motivate an L2 tone production training approach that consists of explicit tone instruction followed by gradual exposure to more variable speech.]]> Wed 29 Mar 2023 12:32:34 AEDT ]]> An exploration of design principles to enhance students' L2 acquisition in a flipped class https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:43533 Wed 21 Sep 2022 11:32:58 AEST ]]> The relationship between foreign language aptitude and English language proficiency among Saudi learners of English as a foreign language in Saudi universities https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:8267 Wed 11 Apr 2018 16:09:40 AEST ]]> Effects of acculturation factor on Saudi Arabian English language learners: a contextual comparison study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:14040 Wed 11 Apr 2018 13:09:12 AEST ]]> Social factors affecting the acculturation of young Saudi children in the Australian context https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:10914 Wed 11 Apr 2018 13:02:51 AEST ]]> English language attitudes and motivation among adult migrants in Australia https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:2749 Wed 11 Apr 2018 12:50:56 AEST ]]> A new perspective on Chinese language teaching and teacher training in Australia https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:48342 Tue 14 Mar 2023 17:29:43 AEDT ]]> On the form and function of reflexives in artificial languages https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:837 Sat 24 Mar 2018 10:43:25 AEDT ]]> The Critical Period Hypothesis revisited https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:3892 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:22:17 AEDT ]]> Age and second language acquisition: Is there a critical period? https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:36291 Mon 23 Mar 2020 14:29:31 AEDT ]]> Sequential Second Language Acquisition For Speech Production: Implicit Learning Processes And Knowledge Bases And Instructional Exemplifications For German https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:676 Fri 23 Mar 2018 18:22:28 AEDT ]]>
